How to build an acne routine that actually works

Most acne routines fail for one of three reasons: too many actives introduced at once, inconsistent use, or the wrong treatment for the type of acne present.

Start with a gentle cleanser and a single active. Retinoids remain the backbone of most routines because they normalise follicular shedding, but they need eight to twelve weeks of consistent use before you judge them.

Layer sun protection every morning without exception. Post-inflammatory pigmentation darkens with UV, so SPF is treatment, not an optional extra.

Escalate to prescription care if you have painful nodules, scarring, or no improvement after eight weeks of consistent over-the-counter treatment.
