Understanding hair loss: the four most common causes

Androgenetic alopecia produces gradual thinning at the crown and temples and responds best to early medical therapy.

Telogen effluvium is diffuse shedding two to three months after a trigger such as illness, surgery or significant stress, and usually recovers.

Alopecia areata causes well-defined round patches and is autoimmune in origin.

Scarring alopecias destroy the follicle permanently, which is why early specialist assessment matters so much.
