Pigmentation

Overview

Hyperpigmentation covers a range of presentations including sun spots, post-inflammatory marks and hormonal patches. Treatment depends on the depth and cause of the pigment.

Common symptoms

  • Dark patches

Areas of darker pigment than surrounding skin.

  • Skin texture change

Roughness, bumpiness or loss of smoothness.

Why it happens

Ultraviolet exposure, inflammation, hormonal changes, certain medications and skin injury.

Self-care that helps

Apply broad-spectrum SPF 50 daily, wear a hat in strong sun and avoid picking at healing skin.

When to seek advice

Seek advice if a pigmented area changes shape, colour or size, or bleeds — this should be assessed urgently.
