Overview

Psoriasis causes accelerated skin cell turnover, producing well-defined plaques with silvery scale, commonly on elbows, knees and scalp. It can also affect nails and joints.

Common symptoms

  • Flaking or scale

Visible shedding of skin flakes or plaques.

  • Itching

    An uncomfortable sensation prompting scratching.

  • Redness

Persistent or intermittent facial or skin redness.

Why it happens

Immune dysregulation, genetics, streptococcal infection, stress, smoking and certain medications.

Self-care that helps

Moisturise daily, avoid skin trauma, manage stress and stop smoking where possible.

When to seek advice

Seek advice if plaques are widespread, painful, or if you develop joint pain or stiffness.
